I am not legally allowed to tell you that I’m a lawyer, because I’m not. But I can tell you that I am a filmmaker who’s acquired a unique pool of knowledge about fair use as it relates to film with a want to share that knowledge. My hope is that filmmakers can use this guide as an entry point into understanding the complicated, yet necessarily intertwined worlds of movie making, copyright and fair use. Each project is unique and should be looked at on an individual basis, and you should always talk to someone who can legally call themselves a lawyer. Filmmaking is an art, yes, but filmmaking is also a business, and we should be able to profit from our art while having the rights attached to that art be respected.
